Genderless Fashion
Since the dawn of time there has been an automatic divide between the fashion of men and women. Regarding what one can and cannot wear solely based on gender is an absurd idea. However, the judgment of society may be the honest motive of the very structure in fashion considering gender. With every step and breath we take, we fear the judgment of others respecting what is and isn't acceptable in the eyes of society. As we continue to think more progressively, the conventional ideas of gender norms begin to shift. The femininity within men shall be freely expressed in the same way that women should their masculinity.
Our general fear of judgment is the purpose supporting the restrictions that limits us to explore new grounds of fashion. The colourful and welcoming silhouettes of the clothes positively provide a sense of expression in this world, a world littered with figures of a nonentity. It is known that fashion will never stop its continuous evolution in style, so we must collectively remember the proposal that clothing is relevant to how one wears it, opposed to who it’s made for.
In view of the boxes individuals are put in regarding gender roles, it dictates the way the world expects us to present ourselves. The way a man is scheduled to appear and present himself is typically a front to conform to a societal design: rugged and dominant. Through the facade of toxic masculinity, it is not predicted that one will show up in a sundress with silk gloves on. It is a challenge to many to even feel comfortable enough to dress as they please, which is no surprise to the reason for Men’s fashion. In comparison to women who are expected to behave in a submissive yet appropriate manner, which is why many foresee them dressing frilly. However, Women’s fashion provides a space of flexibility in the arena of exploring genderless style, opposed to past ideals when we had a very narrow field to explore. Whereas now women are able to wear both pants and a dress without being harshly judged by the vast majority, however that is not the case regarding Men’s fashion. Nonetheless, the very idea of gender is a social construct, therefore it is essential that we illustrate ourselves in an honest light and prevail against societal suppression.
Fashion supplies the freedom of expression that we crave in order to embody the creativity within our individuality. Designers such as Jean Paul Gaultier and Vivienne Westwood incorporate style with no bounds to gender within their designs. Pushing unisex fashion is not the main focus, but freedom of expression by ignoring the bounds of gender is.
